Discovered in Rome in 1506 and immediately recognized as a masterpiece, the Laocoön depicts the Trojan priest Laocoön and his two sons being crushed to death by sea serpents sent by the gods — punishment for warning the Trojans against the wooden horse. The sculpture, now in the Vatican Museums, dates from around 40–30 BC and is attributed to three sculptors from Rhodes: Agesander, Athenodoros, and Polydorus. Michelangelo, who was present at its excavation, was profoundly influenced by it, and it has shaped Western art ever since. The writhing bodies, the agonised expressions, the extraordinary technical mastery of marble — all are captured in this photograph with the clarity and respect the work demands.
