The most perfect ceiling in the world — this fine art photograph looks straight up into the coffered dome of the Pantheon in Rome, one of the greatest architectural achievements in human history. The Pantheon was built by the Emperor Hadrian around 125 AD and has stood, virtually intact, for nearly two thousand years. Its dome, with a diameter of 43.3 metres, was the largest in the world for over thirteen centuries and remains one of the most awe-inspiring interior spaces ever created. At its apex is the oculus — a circular opening 8.7 metres across — through which light pours in a single shaft that moves slowly around the interior as the day progresses. This photograph captures the dome in all its geometric perfection: the five rings of 28 coffers receding towards the oculus, the play of light and shadow across the ancient concrete, the sense of space and eternity that the Romans intended. A piece of the ancient world for your wall. Printed on Fuji Crystal Archive paper with optional acrylic glass or Alu-Dibond mounting for a gallery-quality finish.
