This portrait was made during a journey through Copper Canyon in Chihuahua, Mexico, where I traveled to photograph the Tarahumara, or Rarámuri, people and the extraordinary landscape they have inhabited for generations. Living among the vast canyons and remote mountain communities of the Sierra Madre Occidental, the Rarámuri have maintained a remarkably strong connection to their land, traditions, and way of life. My intention was not simply to document the outward details of their culture, but to create portraits that conveyed something of the individual—the dignity, strength, and quiet presence of the person standing before my camera. This photograph emerged from one of those encounters. Removed from the distractions of a conventional portrait setting, the image is about the simplicity of one human being meeting another, however briefly, across differences of language and culture. For me, the resulting portrait carries both the intimacy of that moment and a sense of the enduring relationship between the Rarámuri people and the dramatic landscape of Copper Canyon.
