The greatest church in Christendom, captured in fine art — this photograph of St Peter's Basilica at the Vatican brings one of the world's most magnificent buildings into your home with all the grandeur and spiritual weight it commands in person. The current basilica, built over the tomb of St Peter the Apostle, was begun in 1506 and took over a century to complete, with contributions from the greatest architects of the Renaissance and Baroque periods: Bramante, Raphael, Michelangelo, Giacomo della Porta, and Gian Lorenzo Bernini all played a role in its creation. Michelangelo designed the iconic dome, which at 136 metres remains one of the tallest in the world. The facade, the colonnade, the piazza — every element of St Peter's was designed to overwhelm and inspire, to make the visitor feel the presence of something larger than themselves. This photograph captures that quality: the sheer scale, the architectural perfection, the sense of history and faith accumulated over five centuries. Printed on Fuji Crystal Archive paper with optional acrylic glass or Alu-Dibond mounting for a gallery-quality finish.
