The greatest surviving sculpture of the ancient world — this fine art photograph of the Winged Victory of Samothrace captures one of the most thrilling works of art ever made. Created around 190 BC, probably to commemorate a naval victory, the Nike of Samothrace was discovered on the Greek island of Samothrace in 1863 and has been displayed at the top of the Daru staircase in the Louvre ever since, where she stops visitors in their tracks. Headless and armless, she is nonetheless more alive than almost any sculpture with a face: the great wings spread behind her, the drapery pressed against her body by the wind, the sense of a figure that has just alighted on the prow of a ship and is still moving, still triumphant, still divine. Michelangelo, Rodin, and countless others have acknowledged her as the supreme achievement of ancient sculpture. This photograph does justice to her power and presence. Printed on Fuji Crystal Archive paper with optional acrylic glass or Alu-Dibond mounting for a gallery-quality finish.
